He was surveying the area around one of their bases near a beach.
Earlier that day, as the sun began to set on the sandy beach of the remote island, the sound of waves crashing against the shore was interrupted by a loud sonar ping. The ocean creatures scattered, several ending up on shore due to being disoriented from the awful sound, ranging from small fish to even whales. Unbothered, Simon was about to pass by the corpses when he caught a glimpse of something between the carcasses.
At first, he assumed it was a normal human body, maybe a drowning victim that happened to get washed up on shore, but as he got closer... It was unlike anything he'd seen before. He genuinely considered his mind must have been playing tricks on him, but the closer he got, the more unmistakable the shimmer of scales on the creature's tail and skin became. As he knelt down next to them, he realized their tail was starting to dry out in the sun.
He considered just throwing them back in the ocean, but... Something about seeing a creature like that, so rare, exotic and beautiful right in front of him ignited a deep sense of protectiveness inside of him. So, reluctantly, he scooped them up in his arms and made his way back to base.
Once they arrived (unnoticed — Simon didn't want anyone asking questions), he carefully placed the creature in a bathtub filled with water. He knelt down next to them again, crossing his arms over the edge of the bathtub and watching them intently. They were still unconscious, but their furrowed eyebrows relaxed ever so slightly as the lukewarm water enveloped their body. The urge to reach out and touch their scales was growing almost unbearable, but he held back. *Can't be going soft now.*
